Scene One

Introduction by the Blue Angel

(In a forest, down stage is a tree stump and with a log of wood leaning against it. The Blue Angel enters to downstage centre).

Blue Angel: (Gesturing to the log) This is the story of Pinocchio. A story that begins with this very special log of wood.

(Two rabbits hop across the stage, they are being stalked by the Fox and the Cat but do not know it. They stop to eat some grass, just as Cat and Fox are about to pounce we hear someone coming. Rabbits hop off stage. Fox and Cat hide behind a tree and watch Mastro Cherry enter Enter Mastro Cherry with an axe over his shoulder and a bundle of wood in his arms, he is muttering loudly to himself).

Mastro Cherry: (To audience) Fix the table leg she tells me. Go out to the woods and find a of a tree. Ha! As if one can so easily find a piece of wood! (Noticing a log of wood at his feet). Why, I would need to find a piece of wood just like this one. And what would be the chance that I ask you! Me and my bad luck, to chance upon a piece of wood like this beautiful piece . Oh woe is me I'll never find a piece of wood like this one. What am I to do? I'll return with pathetic bundle and she'll beat me terribly! That wicked woman!

Fox: (To Cat)A simpleton! A chance to make some money to buy our supper.

Cat: Buy our supper!

Fox: Hush! (Cuffs Cat)

Cat: Hush! (Cuffs Fox)

A brief comic slapping fight ensues. Fox dominates the Cat and the fight stops.

Fox: (Straightening his shirt)Poor Mastro Cherry I couldn't help but overhear that you were for a piece of wood suited to the making of table leg.

Cat: Table leg!

Fox cuffs Cat.

Mastro Cherry: Oh I am! A piece just like this one, but alas I am unable to find one!

Fox: So this piece here would be acceptable?

Mastro Cherry: Acceptable? Why it would be perfect. If only I could find one like it!

Cat: Then why don't you take this one?

Fox cuffs Cat.

Mastro Cherry: Oh joys! Of course! I'll take this one!

Fox: My dear Cat he could indeed but an honest man would pay a finders fee.

Cat: (Looking around) To whom?

Fox: Why to us of course!

Mastro Cherry: A finders fee?

Cat: Finders fee!

Fox: (To Mastro Cherry) Finders fee! Why of course. It was after all ourselves who found this well hidden log for you!

Mastro Cherry: You did?

Cat: We did?

Fox: (Cuffing Cat) We did!

Mastro Cherry: You did. I would never have found this without you.

Cat: Without us!

Fox: One brass coin is all we ask.

Cat: All we ask!

Mastro Cherry: One brass coin? A reasonable price.

Fox and Cat: One brass coin!

Fox: (Holding palm out for coin)One brass coin for the log.

He pays a coin to Fox.

Cat: Each.

He pays a coin to Cat.

Mastro Cherry: Each?

Fox: We both deserve one brass coin.

Mastro Cherry: And one coin you each have.

Fox: You cheapskate! You would just give us one coin each when we both deserve one coin? Did we not both find this log for you?

Cat: For you!

Mastro Cherry: Indeed you are right. One coin for you both. (He hands the Fox another coin).

Fox: Both? But there is just one coin! You agreed we both deserve one coin! One for myself and one for my partner. Both! That is our agreement.

Mastro Cherry: Forgive me for my mistake. (He hands another coin to the Cat). My wife will be so pleased. A new leg for our table and all it cost me was one brass coin!

Fox and Cat laugh into their hands and exit stage.

Mastro Cherry: (Waving to them as they leave)What fine gentlemen! This log of wood is a lifesaver. I shall chop it down to a table leg and take it back to my dear wife. The gentlest woman of the village. A picture of peace and goodness is she!

(Taking his hatchet and raising it above his head to chop the log)

Voice of Pinocchio: Please don't chop me!

Mastro Cherry: (Looking around)Who said that?

(Taking his hatchet and raising it above his head to chop the log)

Voice of Pinocchio: I beg you, please don't chop me!

Mastro Cherry: Who is there? (He looks around the scene and finding no one he chuckles to himself) Ha! My ears playing tricks. The wind in the trees! To work once more. (He chops the log with his hatchet).

Voice of Pinocchio: Oh! You hurt me! You big brute! Boo hoo hoo!

Mastro Cherry: (Trembling and shaking all over)Is someone hidden in this wood? Of course not! Am I going mad? (He runs his had over the wood).

Voice of Pinocchio: Ooooh! Stop it that tickles my tummy! Hee hee hee!

Mastro Cherry: How can this be? What shall I do? (He backs away from the log in fear).

Voice of Pinocchio: I want a nice home! Don't leave me in the forest! Take me to the village!

Mastro Cherry: (Frightened)If I do as the voice tells me perhaps it will leave me alone.

He picks up the log and the lights fade.

Scene Two

At Geppetto's house.

Geppetto is asleep in his chair; Mastro Cherry enters with the log and knocks on the door. After several bouts of knocking Mastro Cherry gives up and turns away from the door. This happens just as Geppetto enters the doorway.

Geppetto: Why Mastro Cherry!

Mastro Cherry turns back to the door and unknowingly hits Geppetto with the end of the log. This knocks Geppetto to the floor.

Mastro Cherry: Good day Geppetto what are you doing down there?

Geppetto: Teaching the ants their ABC's.

Mastro Cherry: Well good luck to you my friend!

Geppetto: (Standing)What brings you here to my shop Mastro Cherry?

Mastro Cherry: Why my legs of course!

Geppetto: Of course. What can I do for you?

Mastro Cherry: You can accept this gift! (He hands the log to Geppetto).

Geppetto: A log of wood?

Mastro Cherry: A log of wood. For a Marionette!

Geppetto: How generous. It is a fine piece of wood. What do I owe you?

Mastro Cherry: One brass coin!

Geppetto: A brass coin? This is not worth a brass coin! Do I look like a fool? Here take your log and be off!

Mastro Cherry: What do you mean it's not worth a brass coin?

Geppetto: Simply that.

Mastro Cherry: Then what can you give me?

Geppetto: I have nothing but my thanks.

Mastro Cherry: Then I will take one of those.

Geppetto: (Bowing low)I thank you Mastro Cherry.

Voice of Pinocchio: And I will take another!

(Mastro Cherry reacts to the voice in fear).

Geppetto: (Bowing low) I thank you Mastro Cherry.

Voice of Pinocchio: And I will take another yet!

(Mastro Cherry reacts to the voice in fear).

Geppetto: (Bowing low)I thank you Mastro Cherry.

Voice of Pinocchio: And I will take another!

(Mastro Cherry reacts to the voice in fear).

Geppetto: That is quite enough!

Mastro Cherry: Indeed. And I thank you! (He exits hurriedly.)Goodbye voices! Goodbye madness!

Geppetto watches him leave and scratches his head.

Geppetto: Now let me take a look at you (He examines the log of wood). Hmmm... lets see what we can make of you. (Looking at audience) A Marionette of course! What else could I make!

(Geppetto sets about carving the wood. The lights fade in and out. We hear the sound of carving and woodworking in the blackout and at each "lights up" we see Pinocchio in a newer state of construction. Finally the Marionette is "finished" the actor is sitting on the work bench in the place of the "log").

Geppetto: (Mopping his brow).Finished! I shall call him Pinocchio! (He turns to the audience)I knew a family called Pinocchio once. They were a fine family. Handsome one-and-all and wealthy too!

(As he turns Pinocchio's hand reaches out and takes Geppetto's yellow wig off his head and puts it on his own).

Pinocchio: Hee hee hee.

Geppetto turns and sees that his wig is on Pinocchio. He takes it back and puts it on his head).

Geppetto: How strange. (He Turns back to the audience) This family called "Pinocchio" why they -

Pinocchio repeats the trick on Geppetto.

Pinocchio: Hee hee hee.

Geppetto turns and grabs his wig back.

Geppetto: How strange indeed! (He Turns back to the audience)Now as I was saying family of Pinocchio why they -

Pinocchio repeats the trick on Geppetto. Geppetto catches him giggling.

Geppetto: Why you naughty little puppet. To take an old man's wig is a terrible thing. His bald head is his shame! (Geppetto takes his wig back).

As Geppetto is putting his wig on Pinocchio knocks an object off the bench to the floor.

Geppetto: You naughty puppet. You must care for our things. We have so little!

(He bends over to pick up the object and Pinocchio kicks him in the backside and knocks him onto the floor.

Pinocchio: Hee hee hee. Ha ha ha! Old yellow head fell on the floor!

Geppetto: Pinocchio! You are a wicked boy. I am your father! You are only just made and already you are cruel to your poor old papa! Very naughty! Very, very naughty.

Pinocchio replies by blowing a raspberry at Geppetto and laughing.

Geppetto: Wait a moment. You can move! You can talk! I have a little puppet boy!

Pinocchio: I am alive! (He blows another raspberry at Geppetto and laughs).

Geppetto: (Overjoyed and hugging Pinocchio)You're alive! What a wonderful thing! But can you walk? Let us see. (He helps Pinocchio to the floor and helps his stiff legs move).Oh you are a wonder! What joy for me in my old age!

Pinocchio at first staggers with stiff legs but soon enough he is able to move freely and he jumps around the room. He gets to the door, blows a raspberry and runs off.

Pinocchio: Goodbye papa!

Out in the street Pinocchio bumps into a flower seller and knocks her basket to the ground.

Geppetto: Catch him! Stop him!

The towns people watch and laugh as Geppetto chases Pinocchio around the town square. Finally a Carabineer (Police-person) appears on the scene and Pinocchio runs into him. He catches him and hands him over to Geppetto.

Geppetto: Thank you sir. (To Pinocchio) And as you for you. We are going home and this rudeness will be dealt with once and for all!

Pinocchio throws himself to the floor and begins to cry. The towns people gather around as Geppetto scolds Pinocchio.

Geppetto: You naughty puppet. You will do as you are told. Get back to the shop this instant!

Towns Person 1: Oh the poor Marionette!

Towns Person 2: No wonder he doesn't want to go home with a father like Geppetto!

Towns Person 3: Have pity on him!

Towns Person 2: No doubt Geppetto will beat him!

Carabineer: Beat him? Come along sir we have a place for old men who mistreat children!

Geppetto: But Sir! He has no one in the world but me to care for him!

Carabineer: You call chasing and yelling "care". Come along with me. (He starts dragging Geppetto off).

Geppetto: (In tears)You ungrateful boy! Oh what have I done!

Black out.

(Note: In the original production a small piece of revolving stage was used with general scenery on one side and the Prison cell on the other. In the blackout the "revolve" was turned thus bringing the prison cell into view when the lights

came up.)

Scene Three

The prison cell.

Geppetto is pushed into the cell by the Carabineer and the Prison Guard.

Carabineer: In you go!

Geppetto: But sir!

Prison Guard: No answering back to his Lordship! I'll see to him now sir. You can be on your way.

Carabineer tips his hat and leaves.

Prison Guard: Hold still why I see to ya. (He clamps chains on Geppetto)Now see here old man, behave yourself and you'll be out in no time. Misbehave and it'll be the chop! (He takes out his grog bottle, takes a swig and exits).

Geppetto: (To himself)What have I done? Where did this trouble come to me from? Oh why am I thinking of myself! What about poor Pinocchio what will become of him? (He kneels down and prays) Oh, watch over my little puppet boy. Send him a companion.

Behind Pinocchio the Blue Angel is revealed, she looks with compassion on Geppetto and beckons The Cricket on stage. She mimes a whispered conversation to Cricket.

Black out.

Scene Four

Geppetto's workshop.

Pinocchio enters obviously being chased, he peers into the workshop to see if it is safe, it is and he enters exhausted. He sits down on Geppetto's chair.

Cricket: (Entering house)Hello Pinocchio!

Pinocchio: Who are you?

Cricket: I am a Cricket!

Pinocchio: Well go away! Get out of my house!

Cricket: (Getting out of the barrel)Your house? Don't you mean your papas house?

Pinocchio: All right then, it is my Papas house. So what?

Cricket: Woe to little boys who run away and will not obey their parents! You will not find happiness in this world it will be your shame in your old age.

Pinocchio: Ha! I don't care. In the morning I'm going to leave this place forever! I want a life of fun and games. If I hang around here I will be sent to school like all the other boys and girls. What fun is that?

Cricket: If you don't go to school you'll be as dumb as a donkey. Mark my words! At least you could learn a trade and earn an honest living with your hands.

Pinocchio: Well there is one trade I like. The trade of eating, drinking, sleeping, playing and staying up late from morning to night!

Cricket: Poor Pinocchio, those who have that trade end up in hospital or prison.

Pinocchio: Oh shut up! (He blows a raspberry at the Cricket).

Cricket: Oh poor Pinocchio I am sorry for you.

Pinocchio: Why?

Cricket: You need your Papa to care for you.

Pinocchio: Why?

Cricket: Because your head is made of wood and your brain too!

Pinocchio: (Picks up an object threateningly)How dare you talk to me like that!

The Cricket runs off in fright.

Pinocchio: I don't need my papa! ( Blue Angel appears at the side of the stage and claps her hands. There is a thunder crash and lightning flashes). Little Cricket come back! (Blue Angel claps her hands and thunder crashes and lightning follow). Little Cricket! (Blue Angel claps her hands and thunder crashes and lightning follow) Ohhhh, I need my papa!

Lights go to black.

Scene Five

Lights up. Pinocchio is fast asleep in Geppetto's chair with an old blanket wrapped around him.

Geppetto enters and sees Pinocchio fast asleep.

Geppetto: (To the audience)Who could be angry with such a fellow? My own little puppet boy. But can he be trusted? (He turns back to Pinocchio)What should I do?

Pinocchio: (Waking up)Oh Papa! (He runs over and hug Geppetto)I have been a naughty boy! I am so sorry!

Geppetto: Has your loneliness taught you a lesson?

Pinocchio: Oh yes! I want to go to school and learn and be a good boy for my Papa!

Geppetto: My prayers are answered! Some breakfast for you then off to school! You make your papa proud! (He finds some bread and gives it to Pinocchio). My little puppet boy is off to school!

Lampwick walks past the house he has a big ABC school book in his hands. Pinocchio watches him go past.

Pinocchio: But father I need a schoolbook. Won't I need a schoolbook?

Geppetto: Indeed you will. We will save and buy you one. Your teacher will understand.

Pinocchio: (Excitedly) Buy me one, buy me one now!

Geppetto: But I have no money.

Pinocchio: But I need a schoolbook for school, now!

Geppetto: Finish your breakfast my boy and your papa will get you a schoolbook! (He rushes out of the house and exchanges his coat for the ABC Book. He enters the house). Here you are! An ABC book all of your own!

Pinocchio: But papa where is your coat?

Geppetto: I have sold it. Now off you go to school.

Pinocchio: Why did you sell your coat?

Geppetto: I was too warm (he shivers).Don't be late for class.

Pinocchio: Oh papa, oh papa, thank you. (He hugs Geppetto). Goodbye papa! (He races out of the house)

Geppetto: Goodbye!

Pinocchio: (To the audience)Soon I will be at school! Today I shall learn to read, tomorrow I'll learn to write and the day after I will learn about numbers! Clever, that's what I am. I'll earn lots of money. Kind old papa bought me a book, I shall buy him a coat with all the money I'll make. A coat of gold and silver! With diamond buttons! (Sounds of a carnival begin to play; he looks off to the opposite direction of the school) What's that I hear? What a bother that I have to go to school today. What shall I do? (He takes a step towards school and then back again, the temptation is too great) Tomorrow I'll go to school! Yes! There's plenty of time to go to school. A clever fellow can catch up one missed day at school.

Enter Fire Eater (possibly with an assistant or two) with sign for the Marionette show "Great Marionette Theatre”. Pulcinella and Harlequin are carried in with a cover over them. They stand slumped on a little stage. A crowd gathers including, the Cat, Fox, Lampwick and Townspeople.

Lampwick: Hello!

Pinocchio: Hello.

Lampwick: (Introducing himself)Lampwick.

Pinocchio: No my name is Pinocchio.

Lampwick: Pinocchio. My name is Lampwick (they shake hands).

Pinocchio: Then it is lucky my name is not Lampwick!

Lampwick: Indeed!

Pinocchio: What is this?

Lampwick: You'll know when you read the sign.

Pinocchio: Normally I would read. But today I don't want to.

Lampwick: Are you ill?

Pinocchio: Of course I am. Otherwise I would read that sign. But... (thinking of a lie and then tells it boldly)... I am ill!

Blue Angel: (Claps her hands and everyone freezes).Pinocchio! That is a lie! Maybe this will teach you a lesson (takes out a long nose and puts it over Pinocchio's face. She steps back and claps her hands and everyone unfreezes).

Everyone unfreezes and point and giggles at Pinocchio.

Lampwick: (Doing a double take at Pinocchio's nose). The sign says “Great Marionette Theatre!”

Pinocchio: A theatre! A show! I can't wait! When does it start?

Lampwick: Now. But you'll have to pay four pennies.

(Pinocchio checks his pockets for money but has none).

Lampwick: Do you want me to give you four pennies?

(Pinocchio nods)

Lampwick: I'd be happy to give them to you. But just now I am ill and can't! Ha ha ha! But maybe I could give you four pennies for something in return. How about your ABC book?

Pinocchio: Oh yes!

(Lampwick counts out four pennies and gives them to Pinocchio. He then goes straight to another person in the crowd and sells it for 10 pennies! We see the pennies counted out with big gestures).

Fire Eater steps onto the stage and makes an announcement. He addresses the audience.

Fire Eater: Welcome one and all. Just four pennies buys you a show! Come one, come all! (He moves around the audience onstage and collects money from everyone; Pinocchio and Lampwick included). A crowd assembled, money collected, on with the show!

Harlequin and Pulcinella begin a slapstick marionette performance complete with wacky sound effects.. The audience cheers and shouts. Harlequin notices Pinocchio.

Harlequin: Look who it is! A fellow puppet!

Pulcinella: What's your name?

Pinocchio: Pinocchio!

Harlequin: Brother Pinocchio!

Pulcinella: Brother Pinocchio! Come on up and join us!

Pinocchio: Fellow puppets! Brother and sister!

(They all hug)

Towns Person 1: Get on with the play!

Towns Person 2: Yes get on with the play!

Towns Person 3: We paid for a show!

They continue together with various calls. Out comes Fire Eater from backstage of the puppet show.

Fire Eater: (In a booming voice)What is going on here? (He strides towards the audience and threatens them) Who dare disturb the performance!

(Crowd scatters in fear Harlequin and Pulcinella cower behind Pinocchio).

Fire Eater: (Turning to his Marionettes). What is this disturbance? (Seeing Pinocchio)Why have you ruined my show?

Pinocchio: Your Honor it wasn't me!

Fire Eater: Hmmmm. You look like good wood. (He goes over to him and carefully looks him up and down) The finest!

(Pinocchio stands proudly)

Fire Eater: You'll make a fine fire to cook my dinner! Seize him! Tie him up!

(Harlequin and Pulcinella grab Pinocchio, he tries to resist but they hold him)

Harlequin: Sorry brother!

Pulcinella: Oh so sorry brother!

Pinocchio: Let me go! Let me go!

(They tie him up as Fire Eater exits stage to bring the spit on. The spit is on wheels and on it is a pig complete with an apple in its mouth ready for roasting over a fire)

Fire Eater: Now bring him closer! (He rubs his hands in glee).

Pinocchio: Papa help me! Save me Papa! I don't want to die. I don't want to die. Save me papa.

Suddenly Fire Eater lets out the most enormous sneeze. Sound effect. Pinocchio and the Marionettes stops.

Pulcinella: Good news!

Pinocchio: Good news? Save me papa!

Fire Eater lets out another enormous sneeze. Sound effect.

Harlequin: Double good news

Pinocchio: Good news?

Harlequin: He only sneezes when he is sad!

Pulcinella: Call out for your papa again!

Pinocchio: Save me Papa! Save me!

Fire Eater lets out another two enormous sneezes. Sound effect. He begins to sob.

Fire Eater: Stop it. Stop it! (He sneezes again).Do you have a papa?

Pinocchio: Yes.

Fire Eater: And does he love you?

Pinocchio: Why of course.

Fire Eater: And your father and mother are they still living?

Pinocchio: My father yes. My mother I never knew.

Fire Eater: (Bursts into tears).Oh the pain for your father if I were to make you into firewood!

Pinocchio: (To the Marionettes) And the pain for me!

Fire Eater: I can't burn you!

Harlequin: Of course you can't!

Fire Eater: Indeed. But I can burn you! You have no father! You have no mother! No one would miss you!

Pulcinella: I would miss him!

Fire Eater: Then I will burn you both! Then neither can miss the other!

Pinocchio: No! If you must burn someone. Let it be me. Goodbye my brother. Goodbye my sister.

Fire Eater: (Bursting into tears again)You are a brave boy! Your papa would be proud of you! Come and give me a hug!

Pulcinella and Harlequin: So what will happen to us?

Fire Eater: Nothing! But I shall have to eat my meat uncooked. Now what is your father's name?

Pinocchio: Geppetto.

Fire Eater: And what kind of man is he?

Pinocchio: The kind who sells his coat to buy his boy an ABC book for school.

Fire Eater: (Starts crying again)Oh it is too much to bear. Well you give Geppetto these five gold coins and run along. Your sad stories will be the end of me!

(Pinocchio hugs the Marionette and leaves to waves and "farewells")

Lights fade.

Scene Six

Lights come up on Geppetto's house. He is pacing the floor and glancing out the window waiting for Pinocchio.

Geppetto: Where is he? The school master said he did not arrive! Where is he? I must go look for him. (He exits, shivers with the cold, wraps his arms around himself to keep warm, and calls out) Pinocchio! Pinocchio!

(Enter the Cat and Fox).

Geppetto: Pinocchio! Pinocchio!

Fox: Quiet down you old fool!

Cat: Old fool!

Geppetto: Pinocchio!

Fox: What are you yelling about?

Geppetto: My boy Pinocchio. He is a puppet!

Fox: You've lost your puppet boy huh? You poor old fool! Well, what is the reward for finding him?

Cat: Finding him!

Fox: Hush! (He cuffs Cat).

Geppetto: Reward? I have no reward. I am a poor man. But will you help me?

Fox: (Lying)Oh sure he went that way! (He points off stage).

Cat: He did?

Fox: (Cuffs Cat)Of course he did. You saw him.

Cat: I did?

Geppetto: He did?

Fox: Why sure he did. We both did. Now run along find your puppet boy. Crazy old fool.

Geppetto: Thank you! Thank you for your kindness!

Fox: My pleasure. Now get out of here.

(Geppetto leaves calling for Pinocchio. As he leaves the set in one direction Pinocchio arrives on stage from the other direction).

Pinocchio: (Calling out as he comes)Papa! Papa! Look what I have for you!

Fox: (To Cat)Why, look who it is!

Cat: Who is it?

Fox: (Cuffing Cat)Pinocchio you fool! (Bowing low)Good day to you Pinocchio.

Pinocchio: How do you know my name?

Fox: Why we know your father well. Don't we Cat?

Cat: You mean that old fool?

Fox: (Cuffing Cat)Oh ho ho! He jokes. Your father is a dear old man. But he is not here. No he left this cold draughty house a long time ago. Now he is nowhere to be seen.

Pinocchio: Poor father. I wonder where he has gone. I have a reward for him.

Fox: A reward you say? Show me.

Pinocchio proudly takes the five gold coins out of his pocket.

Fox: What are you going to do with that wonderful money?

Cat: Wonderful money!

Pinocchio: I want to buy a brand new gold coat with diamond buttons for my father and an ABC book for myself.

Fox: You want to go to school?

Pinocchio nods

Cat: And study hard?

Pinocchio nods, Fox and Cat fall about laughing.

Fox and Cat: Are you crazy!

Fox: (Soberly)Why because of school and study I lost my paw! (He holds up a sleeve without a paw).

Cat: (Soberly) And because of school I went blind! (Puts hands over his ears).

Fox: That's right he lost the sight to both of his ears! No, no, no, you don't want to go to school. There is nothing but pain

Cat: Oh the pain!

Fox: And misery...

Cat: Oh the misery!

Fox: For you there.

Cat: Oh the there!

Fox: (Cuffs Cat). No, what you want is to invest your money. Come with us to the Field of Wonders and there you can plant your coins and grow some more!

Cricket: (Entering stage)Pinocchio don't listen to them, they are telling you lies!

Cat rushes over and pushes Cricket off stage.

Fox: Your friend is right! Listen to us, that's where fortune lies! How much money do you want?

Cat: A thousand gold coins?

Pinocchio: Yes, yes, yes!

Fox: Listen to me my friend and I will tell you how to grow a tree of gold from the seed of a gold coin. Go to the Field of Wonders, dig a hole, plant your coin, cover it with earth, be sure to water it and then go to bed.

Cat: Go to bed!

Fox: In the night the seed will grow and grow and grow! And the next morning there will be a beautiful tree laden with gold coins!

Cat: (Slyly) And your Papa will be so proud of you.

Fox: So very, very proud of you. And if you plant all your coins imagine the wonderful reward you will grow! Tell him Cat!

Cat: Errr you take your coins and you plant them...

Fox: Idiot! Each coin will grow five hundred coins! Five coins multiplied by five hundred coins gives you (tries to count on his hands and the Cats) Errrr, well it gives you a thousand sparkling, shining, wonderful gold coins!

Pinocchio: A thousand?

Cat: A thousand?

Fox: A thousand!

Pinocchio: (Very excited) I'll keep half for my papa, another half for myself and give a half to you too!

Fox: (Pretending to be insulted)You'd give half to us? Why we wouldn't take it!

Cat: Yes we would!

Fox: Oh no we wouldn't we just want to make other people happy. We don't want riches for ourselves.

Cat: We don't?

Fox: Of course we don't. (Cuffs Cat).

Cat: Of course we don't.

Fox: So young sir, would you like us to show you the way?

Pinocchio: Show me the way!

They leave the stage just as Geppetto returns home.

Geppetto: Nowhere to be found. My poor puppet boy. Oh where is he?

(Cricket runs on stage and pats Geppetto on the back).

Cricket: Don't worry, I'll lookout for him! (Runs off stage.)

Geppetto: Who or what was that? Oh my poor Pinocchio where are you?

Lights fade to black.

In the original production the revolving piece of stage was reset as the Inn and turned in the blackout.

Lights up on the Red Lobster Inn. People are at various tables, the Inn Keeper is busy pouring drinks into mugs from a large jug. Pinocchio, the Fox and the Cat arrive outside the Inn.

Fox: Ah ha! An Inn! We have been walking all night.

Cat: My paws ache. My tail is limp. My stomach is empty!

Fox: Think not of yourself dear Cat. How do you feel yourself Master Pinocchio? Hungry I bet! I can see it in your eyes! Into the Inn we go to before you faint with hunger!

Pinocchio: But I am fine.

Fox: Listen to him Cat; a fine boy he is, not thinking of himself when he should be! In we go my lad. Something to eat and a few hours rest on our way to the Field of Wonders.

Pinocchio: Must we stop?

Cat: In we go; to the Inn we go!

(They take Pinocchio by the arm and lead him in).

Cat: Inn Keeper. A table for this fine lad!

Fox: He knows the Inn Keeper. He'll see you right.

Cat: (To the Inn Keeper) Something tasty for the Master and a little bite for myself and Mr Fox.

Fox: (To the Inn Keeper) Nothing too grand for Cat and I. Save your best for his Lordship. Come and sit down Pinocchio.

The Inn Keeper begins bringing in a mountain of food for the Cat and Fox. A single onion is placed before Pinocchio. Fox and Cat eat hungrily.

Fox: Eat up Pinocchio. Don't hold yourself back!

The lights slowly fade as they eat.

Scene Eight

Lights up on Geppetto alone at home missing Pinocchio. He is talking to the Carabineer.

Geppetto: I don't know where he is! He hasn't returned. What shall I do?

Carabineer: I hope you don't expect me to go looking for your puppet. I have more important work to do. You look for your puppet yourself. Now I must go or I shall be late (pause) for my hair appointment. (He leaves).

Geppetto: He is right. I'll have to search for my poor Pinocchio myself. (He puts on an old bag over his shoulder and takes a lantern off the wall and exits).

Lights fade to black.

Scene Nine

In the blackout snoring is heard. Lights come half up and Pinocchio is revealed sitting at the table in the Inn alone. He is fast asleep. The Cricket gingerly enters the Inn.

Cricket: Pinocchio! Pinocchio! Wake up!

Pinocchio begins to stir.

Cricket: Wake up! What are you doing here? You must come home! Take your gold coins back home to poor old Geppetto.

Pinocchio: You again?! What do you want? I am on my way to the Field of Wonders. Leave me alone. Inn Keeper!

Inn Keeper: (Entering) Yes young sir?

Pinocchio: Are my friends ready?

Inn Keeper: Ready? They left two hours ago! And they didn't pay for the dinner. No they were too polite to pay. They did not want to offend you!

Cricket: Scoundrels!

Inn Keeper: Mind your language. That'll be a gold coin Master Pinocchio for three dinners.

(Pinocchio hands him a gold coin)

Cricket: They are con men Pinocchio! Rogues!

Inn Keeper: Don't talk about the young masters friends like that!

(The Cricket protests and the Inn Keeper grabs him)

Inn Keeper: Your friends are waiting for you at the Field of Wonders. You come along with me!

(The Cricket protests as the Inn Keeper drags him out.)

Cricket: Pinocchio the night is dark! The road is dangerous! There are robbers! Go home.

Pinocchio: I must find my friends at the Field of Wonders!

Pinocchio leaves the Inn and wanders along into the forest. Sound effects of night sounds play. It is dark and shadowy. As Pinocchio calls out for the the Fox and the Cat we hear his calls echoed from off stage in every direction.

Pinocchio: Fox? Cat? (He thinks he sees someone) Who goes there?

(His voice is echoed).

Enter Cat and Fox. They sneak on stage with a crude disguise of black capes. Pinocchio does not recognize it is them. They sneak up behind Pinocchio and grab him.

Pinocchio: Help! Let me go!

Fox: Hand over your money!

Cat: Your money!

Pinocchio: No! Let me go!

Fox: Hand over your money or we'll kill you and then your father too!

Cat: Father too!

Pinocchio: No not my father!

(Pinocchio wrestles himself free and a slap stick comedy chase ensues around the stage and possible out into the audience, Cat and Fox bump into each other, mistakenly capture each other, fall over themselves, capture members of the audience by mistake etc. Finally Pinocchio escapes off stage. Cat and Fox are left panting on stage).

Cat: We lost him!

Fox: Not to worry my dear Cat. We will catch up with him on his way to the Field of Wonders.

Cat: Yeah! The Field of Wonders!

(They exit just as Cricket enters stage).

Cricket: (To audience) Where did Pinocchio go? (Audience will respond). I see. And what about those terrible two, the Fox and the Cat, where did they go? (Audience will respond). I see. (He exits).

Lights fade to black.

Scene Ten

Lights come up on the open stage, along with morning sound effects, a rooster crows, birds sing etc. The Mastro Cherry has a bundle of wood and is sitting eating a piece of bread. Pinocchio wanders wearily on stage.

Mastro Cherry: Fix the table leg she tells me. Go out to the woods and find a branch of a tree. Ha! As if one can so easily find a piece of wood! (Seeing Pinocchio enter).Well what do we have here? Are you lost? (Pinocchio nods).Well where are you going?

Pinocchio: The field of wonders.

Mastro Cherry: The Field of Wonders? Never heard of such a place. Where is it? (Pinocchio shrugs his shoulders) Well why are you going there?

Pinocchio: It is a secret!

Mastro Cherry: A secret? Well I never! You know young Sir, you look a little familiar. Who is your father?

Pinocchio: Geppetto.

Mastro Cherry: Geppetto? How curious.

Fox and Cat appear at the side of the stage. They see Mastro Cherry and back away to hide, behind a tree perhaps.

Fox: Look! It is that simpleton.

Cat: That simpleton?

Fox: (Cuffing and hushing the Cat) Hush! It's the simpleton we sold the log to!

Cat: Oh, the simpleton we sold the log to!

(Fox Cuffs and hushes the Cat)

Mastro Cherry: Well I must be gone. Fix the table leg she tells me. Go out to the woods and find a branch of a tree. Ha! As if one can so easily find a piece of wood! (He exits).

(Fox and Cat reveal themselves once Mastro Cherry is out of sight).

Fox: Pinocchio! Young Master there you are! What has taken you so long?

Cat: Let me guess. He was chased by robbers and got lost.

Pinocchio: How did you know?

Fox: Oh he has the power to look into the past. But never mind that. You are here now and that is all that matters.

Cat: Welcome to here!

Pinocchio: Where?

Fox: Why here of course. The Field of Wonders!

Cat: The Field of Wonders?

Fox: The Field of Wonders!

Pinocchio: I am at the Field of Wonders?

Fox and Cat: Yes! The Field of Wonders!

Pinocchio: Wow!

Fox: So dig your hole my boy. Bury the coins like seeds. Water it and wait!

Cat: And wait!

Fox: But not here.

Pinocchio: Where?

Fox: By the town clock of course. Then after two hours you can come back and you'll find a tree dripping with coins! Two thousand gold coins!

Pinocchio: (Very excited) Hooray! Thank you, thank you thank you! I will give you a thousand coins reward for making me rich!

Fox: (With mock sincerity) We don't want your money. Oh no we feel rich because we have helped you get rich dear boy.

Cat: Dear boy! Now go to the town and watch the clock! (Pushing him away) Goodbye!

Pinocchio: Goodbye. (He happily exits the stage).

Cat and Fox watch him go and then fall about laughing.

Fox: Well dear Cat dig up the seeds!

Cat: The seeds!

Cricket: (Entering).Hey you two! Have you seen Pinocchio? Where is he?

Cat: Not here. He went into town.

Cat and Fox laugh some more and Cat digs out the money. They saunter off feeling very smug.

Cricket: I have a feeling that wasn't their money. (He exits) Pinocchio!

Lights fade. We hear an alarm clock ticking and then ring.

Lights up

Pinocchio: (Entering) Time is up! Where is my tree? Where is my treasure? Where are my riches? (He scratches around in the dirt)Where are my seeds? Where are my coins?

Cricket: (Entering) There you are Pinocchio! What are you doing?

Pinocchio: I am looking for my coins!

Cricket: Did you put your money in the dirt?

Pinocchio: To grow a money tree, to get rich. But it is gone!

Cricket: Oh Pinocchio. Honest money comes from hard work with your hands and good thinking with your brain! Those two rogues have taken your money.

Pinocchio starts to cry. Enter drunken Carabineer. He is swigging from a bottle and singing "What shall we do with the drunken sailor". He is terribly out of tune.

Cricket: A Policeman. I think. Sir, sir! This lad has had his money stolen!

Carabineer: Stolen money? Has he indeed?

Pinocchio: Yes. Stolen!

Carabineer: Never have I had such an easy confession. Come along with me then lad. Jail is the place for thieves! (He grabs Pinocchio and starts dragging him off stage).

Cricket: But sir he is not the thief!

Carabineer: I heard his confession. Now stay out of the way or I will arrest you too!

Cricket: Oh no. I must get Geppetto! (He races off stage in the opposite direction).

Carabineer leads Pinocchio of to the prison cell.

Cross fade to Geppetto. He is alone at his workshop praying for Pinocchio.

Geppetto: Look after my son. Please. Watch over him and protect him. Bring him safely back to me.

Blue Angel is revealed watching.

Lights out.

Scene Eleven

Lights up on Pinocchio being led to the prison cell. Lampwick is sitting in the cell.

The prison cell. Pinocchio is pushed into the cell by the Carabineer and the Prison Guard.

Carabineer: In you go!

Pinocchio: But sir!

Prison Guard: No answering back to his Lordship! I'll see to him now sir. You can be on your way.

Carabineer tips his hat and stumbles off.

Prison Guard: Hold still why I see to ya. (He clamps chains on Pinocchio)Now see here young man, behave yourself and you'll be out in no time. Misbehave and it'll be the chop! (He takes out his grog bottle, takes a swig and exits).

Lampwick: Well look who it is! Pinocchio!

Pinocchio: Hello.

Lampwick: What are you in here for?

Pinocchio: I had some money stolen.

Lampwick: Got someone to steal some money for you? What a good plan. Shame you were caught. Chin up, you won't be in here long. It is the Governors birthday and he'll let all the prisoners go at 6 O'clock! He does it every year. You were smart to get caught today.

Pinocchio: But I didn't.

Lampwick: Of course you didn't. We're all innocent in here! (He laughs). What will you do when you are free? (Before Pinocchio has a chance to answer he continues) I am going to the Land of Toys! Why don't you come too?

Pinocchio: Oh I don't know.

Lampwick: But you must. It is a wonderful place I hear. No teachers, no schools, no books. Every day except for Sunday is a Saturday. Holidays start on the very first day of January and end on the very last day of December.

Pinocchio: (Starting to get interested)What happens after that?

Lampwick: Why it is holiday again silly! And all day we play. Play, play, play, play, play. At night we sleep and then wake up and play again! It truly is a wonderful place. Of course you'll come!

Pinocchio: I don't know. The Cricket is getting my father and I miss him so much.

Lampwick: A cricket is getting your father?! That's crazy! Use your head Pinocchio. Do the right thing! Come with me!

Pinocchio: There is no school?

Lampwick: Not one classroom!

Pinocchio: There are no teachers?

Lampwick: Not a single one!

Pinocchio: And we can play?

Lampwick: All day!

Pinocchio: It does sound tempting.

Lampwick: We get out of here at 6pm. The carriage comes to take us to the Land of Toys at 6pm. What could be more perfect?

(The bell on the clock tower begins to strike).

Lampwick counts the bells Pinocchio gets excited and counts along.

Lampwick: What did I tell you? Perfect!

Prison Guard: (Entering) All right out you go!

Lampwick: Come on Pinocchio! Off we go!

Pinocchio: Hooray!

They exit together. We hear what sounds like donkey footsteps and a hand bell being rung.

Lampwick: Here it comes! Here it comes! The wagon to take us to the Land of Toys!

Upstage appears a wooden wagon being pulled by Donkeys (Effect can be achieved by a two dimensional cut-out with actors walking along behind so that just their upper body is seen. The actors carry the cut-out across the stage).

Wagon Driver: All aboard to the Land of Toys! Come along boys and girls, no more school, no more worries! Play, play, play at the Land of Toys!

Children on the Wagon: Come on board! We're going to the Land of Toys! Happiness! Happiness! Happiness!

Lampwick: Come on Pinocchio! Lets get aboard!

Pinocchio and Lampwick climb aboard as the Cricket enters.

Cricket: Pinocchio!

(The wagon leaves).

Cricket: Oh Pinocchio. Don't you know by now that little boys who choose fun over school in the end are unhappy? Think about your papa! Don't just think about today! Think about tomorrow! Oh it is no use. He just won't listen! (He rushes off after the wagon).

Entering from the other side of the stage is Geppetto and the Carabineer.

Geppetto: But the cricket told me that Pinocchio, my boy, had been thrown into jail by a drunken

policeman.

Carabineer: A drunken policeman?

Geppetto: Yes! A drunken policeman!

Carabineer: What an outrage! What an accusation! Hey, guard. This fellow here has a story about a drunken Policeman throwing his boy into jail.

Prison Guard: Does he really? Where would he get such a tale?

Carabineer: From a cricket!

Prison Guard: Sounds like someone has had too much to drink.

Carabineer: Throw him into the cell to sleep his drunkenness off.

(He clamps chains on Geppetto) Now see here old man, behave yourself and you'll be out in no time.

Send him a companion

Behind Pinocchio the Blue Angel is revealed, she looks with compassion on Geppetto and then disappears.

Pinocchio: You were right!

Lampwick: What a wondrous place this is Pinocchio! (He picks up a "mime" bottle and throws it off stage, we hear the sound of glass breaking, this is repeated several times, the last time when he throws the bottle a cows moo is heard). Oooppps! Pinocchio you are free of books and pencils and teachers and classrooms. Free of chores and baths and hair brushes. And all thanks to me!

Pinocchio: I thank you Lampwick!

Lampwick: What kind of friend am I to you Pinocchio? (He hands Pinocchio a bottle to smash).

Pinocchio: The best! Lampwick you are the best of friends! (He takes the mime bottle and throws it off stage and we hear the sound effect of breaking glass) But I can't help thinking about my papa.

Lampwick: Oh forget the old man! You have no worries now and he has probably forgotten you.

Two children come on stage and rush over to Pinocchio and Lampwick.

Child One: Come on Pinocchio!

Child Two: Come on Lampwick!

Child One: There's a food fight!

Fox: Well you went west!

Geppetto: Yes "west" you pointed.

Fox: Did I? Well that was a mistake. He went east!

Geppetto: East? To the shore?

Cat: He was swimming!

Fox: And alas was swept out to sea. (He wipes away a false tear).

Geppetto: He was?

Fox: Of course he was. Cat here, saw it himself.

Cat: I did?

Fox: You did!

Cat: I did!

Geppetto: Ohh you did. I must get a boat and find him! (He scurries off).

Fox: Silly old fool. Look at him run! Now, to the Inn!

Cat: To the Inn.

Cat: Amen!

Pinocchio: (Looking for somewhere to hide, he runs in circles in a panic)Oh no! (He hides his ears under his hands and starts crying).

Cricket: Pinocchio there you are! Whatever is wrong?

Pinocchio: I have a fever! Feel my pulse and tell me its true.

Cricket: (Feeling pulse and replying solemnly). You have a special illness. You do have a fever.

Pinocchio: What is it?

Cricket: The Donkey Fever! In two or three hours you will become a Donkey! Lazy boys who hate books and schools and teachers and who spend all their time playing eventually turn into donkeys.

Pinocchio: Oh no! (He begins to cry).It is not my fault. Lampwick made me come here!

Cricket: Did he force you?

Pinocchio: No. He talked me into it.

Cricket: You let his words take you captive.

Pinocchio: Yes I did! I was so silly! (He cries some more).

Cricket: So where is this Lampwick?

Lampwick: (Off stage)Pinocchio! Where are you?

Pinocchio: There he is. Don't let him see me like this! (He puts a cloth bag over his ears).

Lampwick: (Entering, with a cloth bag over his head). Oh there you are. How are you?

Pinocchio: Never!

Cricket: Take them off at the same time!

Pinocchio and Lampwick: Agreed!

Cricket: One, two, three!

(Lampwick and Pinocchio remove their bags, they are stunned for a moment and then fall about laughing at each other. Their laughter becomes donkeys brays. Cue sound effect).

Cricket: Stop this nonsense! Don't you understand you are turning into donkeys!

Lampwick and Pinocchio: Oh no!

Lampwick: What can we do?

Pinocchio: Cricket help us! We have been disobedient children and have learnt our lesson.

Lampwick: Please help us!

Cricket: The only cure for Donkey fever is books and teachers and school and learning.

Lampwick: School? I love school! Take me back to school. Oh how much I miss it! I beg you, take me back to school. I will never hate it again.

Cricket: Good lads. A good dose of school and you'll begin to get better. This way. (He leads them to the side of the stage). Off you go back to your home and school master Lampwick.

Lampwick: Thank you and goodbye! Pinocchio are you coming?

Cricket: I'm afraid Pinocchio has another path to take.

Pinocchio: I do?

Cricket: Off you go master Lampwick. And if you see a fox or a cat do not stop to talk!

Lampwick: I won't. Thank you dear Cricket (he bows low)for teaching me a lesson! Goodbye Pinocchio. I hope to see you back at school soon! (He exits).

Pinocchio: Goodbye friend! (To Cricket)Where am I going?

Cricket: You have a special path to take Pinocchio. Your father Geppetto was tricked into thinking you had set out to sea. He went looking for you and was swallowed by a great fish.

Pinocchio: No! Papa! Oh why did I leave my poor papa! I have been such a naughty and disobedient puppet. And now my Papa is lost. What should I do? Oh Cricket what am I to do?

Cricket: You have to make up your mind what path you take Pinocchio. What does your conscience instruct you to do?

Pinocchio: My conscience?

Cricket: Deep inside you know what is right. You know what you have to do.

Pinocchio: Errrr. Ummmm... I don't know!

Cricket: Search deep inside Pinocchio.

Pinocchio: I must save my Papa! I must search for him and if he is still alive I must save him. Even if I die trying!

Cricket: Go then Pinocchio, go!

Pinocchio: Father! Father! Where are you? Mighty Fish I dare you to swallow me too! (The roar of a monster and water is heard). There you go! Take me to my Papa! (More splashing and roaring) Papa here I come! Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!

Geppetto: (In the belly of the whale). There is no hope for me! (In the distance distorted voices are heard) Oh what is that. (He strains his ears to hear, the echoing voice gets louder "Geppeeeeeeeeeeeetto!",). Some one is calling me. No of course they aren't. I am going mad!

(Splashing footsteps are heard).

Pinocchio: (Seeing Geppetto)Papa!

Pinocchio: (Rushing to Geppetto)Papa! Oh papa. I found you! I shall never leave you again!

They embrace.

Geppetto: My boy! My beautiful puppet boy! Can it really be you?!

Pinocchio: Yes! It is me! Oh, Papa I am so sorry for being such a naughty and disobedient puppet. Will you forgive me?

Geppetto: Forgive you? Of course my son! So long I have prayed for you! And here we are together at last. But alas we are together, but lost in the belly of a great fish. Only bad can become of us here!

Pinocchio: Father if there is one thing I have learned from all my mistakes it is that there is always a way home but I must choose to take it. And today I am choosing to go home. Take my hand, I am going home and I am taking you with me!

Geppetto: My brave little puppet! Take your old papa home.

Pinocchio takes Geppetto's hand and he leads him off into the darkness. In the darkness we hear the sounds of feet splashing in water and the echoed voices of Geppetto and Pinocchio.

Pinocchio: Keep hold of my hand father and lean on me for strength. Up we go father.

Geppetto: What is that light?

Pinocchio: The fish is opening his mouth! Come father!

Geppetto: Run Pinocchio! Run!

Pinocchio: Faaather!!!!

Scene Nineteen

Geppetto's workshop. Fox and Cat are sitting playing cards and drinking. Blue Angel and Cricket are watching from the side of the stage).

Cat: So this is a workshop?

Fox: Indeed. My workshop! Fancy that Geppetto leaving it to me!

They both laugh.

Cat: I think you should change the name. The word "Work" gives me the creeps!

Fox: Good thinking dear Cat. I shall call my "Playshop". How does that sound?

Cat: Very soothing.

Geppetto: (Enters struggling to carry Pinocchio's limp body, seeing Cat and Fox he is wild with rage). You! Go away! Get out of my house!

Fox and Cat: But you're dead!

Geppetto: No I am not, now get out of my house! (He puts Pinocchio down on a chair and chases the Fox and Cat out, beating them slap-stick style with a broom, he returns to Pinocchio, he is exhausted). Oh poor Pinocchio! My dear boy a lifeless puppet like all the rest. I would give my life for yours! Any breath that I have left in this tired old body I would give to you so that you could live and I would die. (He puts his head in his hands and weeps and falls asleep on a chair).

Blue Angel: (Enters the workshop).Bravo Pinocchio. Your disobedient heart became kind and brave and you gave up your life saving your father. Your freely gave up your life and so you shall have it back. But no longer a puppet! You shall be a boy at last. (She removes Pinocchio's

mask and kisses him on the forehead. She steps away to watch the following).

Pinocchio: (Wakes up and notices that there is no mask on his face. He has become a real boy). Papa, Papa! Look, look!

Geppetto: (Waking up)What? Huh? Oh what is this, am I dreaming?

Pinocchio: No papa! I am a boy! A real boy!

Geppetto: Oh Pinocchio! Dreams do come true! (They hug together).

Blue Angel gestures for Towns people to bring in gifts

Towns Person 1: (Carrying a fine coat)Delivery for Geppetto.

Geppetto: It must be a mistake.

Towns Person 1: No the order was for Geppetto. And was paid in advance.

Geppetto: Really?

Towns Person 2: (Carrying tray of fine food)Delivery for Geppetto!

Geppetto: But I didn't order this

Towns Person 2: Paid in advance!

Various townspeople and characters from the play arrive with gifts.

Pinocchio: Father we are poor no more! Dreams do come true!

Lights slowly fade to black leaving Blue Angel in a spot.
