SCENE ONE - The Gardeners House
Gardeners Wife; (Enters, mixing something in a bowl on her hip. Calls out…) Come on, hurry up. It’s not the Sabbath you know. You have work to do, it’s almost dawn.
Gardener: (Enters) I’m coming, I’m coming.
Gardeners Wife: Now you keep an eye on that tomb today. Needs to be treated with respect, keep it nice and tidy around there.
Gardener: Yes, I hear you, you already said that yesterday. It’s not like he's family... I never knew him.
Gardener’s Wife: You should have taken the time to listen to him, to get to know him.
Gardener: You said that yesterday.
Gardeners Wife: But now it’s too late now, he’s gone.
Gardener: You said that too yesterday! (Giving up) Perhaps I should have taken some time to meet him; but I didn't. You're right, it's too late and there's nothing that can be done about it.
Gardener’s Wife: (Indignant) That holy man treated like a common thief! Up there between a pair of thugs. Never hurt nobody. Makes my blood boil to think about it! Ah well, he’s at rest now. He will be greatly missed.
Gardener: Not by the religious lot. (Chuckles as he remembers) I'll hand that to him, he knew how to stir them up. They won't miss him.
Gardener’s Wife: Maybe not, but us ordinary people will miss him. (Pauses and sighs) I guess that’s the end of the healings, his wonderful teaching and the miracles.
Gardener: (Exiting) If you don’t stop chatting I’ll need a miracle to get to work on time!

SCENE TWO - The Garden.
A large rock and a simple wooden bench seat are on stage. Two soldiers enter stage right, stop center stage to converse.
Soldier 1: Linus will have been wetting his tunic! All night in the dark guarding a tomb. Bet he was terrified a ghost would get him! I can just imagine him sucking his thumb and whimpering for his mama (puts on a childish voice) “oh mama, I’m so scared!” (laughs).
Soldier 2: (Rolling his eyes) Give it a rest.
Soldier 1: (Still in the childish voice) Oh mama, I want my cuddly rug! (laughs again like it is a huge joke).
Soldiers exit stage left, Mary Magdalene and Mary mother of James enter stage right, the conversation is in full swing. They are carrying small bundles which would contain spices.
Mary Magdalene: I couldn’t sleep. Every time I closed my eyes I could see him. Hanging there on the cross. The blood dripping down his face from those cuts on his head. Terrible! (Shaking her head) Terrible.
Mary: Mary, please. We were there. You think we can forget it?
Mary Magdalene: How could this have happened? He was still young and there was so much left to do. I’m sure he didn’t want to leave us.
Mary: But yet – he seemed to know exactly what was happening and walked straight into it anyway. Almost recklessly... (confused) but knowing.
Mary Magdalene: I heard Peter drew a sword.
Mary: Yes, young Mark told me.
Mary Magdalene: But Jesus said to put it away.
Mary: He could have taken the opportunity to escape... but instead he walked right into the trap. On purpose!
Mary Magdalene: Like an innocent lamb to slaughter.
(Thoughtful pause)
Mary: Should we have seen it coming? Could we have helped?
Mary Magdalene: I don’t know. What had he said?
Mary: Peter said that at the Passover meal he had broken bread and said this was his "body" and poured out wine saying this was his "blood".
Mary Magdalene: (Agreeing) Yes that's it. And John said he talked of going to his Father and something like (quotes) “ In a little while you will see me no more and then after a little while you will see me”.
Mary: (Laughs sadly) Yes that sounds like our Lord. I did not always understand what Jesus was saying!
Mary Magdalene: I will miss him so much.
Mary: We all will.
Mary Magdalene: (Wondering) What did he mean, “after a little while you will see me again”…?
Mary Magdalene and Mary mother of James exit stage left. Gardener enters wheeling hand cart or wheel barrow with a rake and other tools on. Puts the cart/barrow down and adjusts something, picks cart up again and is about to move off when a loud rumble is heard, Gardener moves as if shaken by an earthquake. Drops some tools.
